Understanding the breeding and birthing seasons for animals is crucial for a SAR Crew Leader to help avoid aggressive wildlife encounters. During these times, animals can be particularly protective of their young, making them more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior if they feel their offspring are threatened. For example, a mother bear can be extremely protective of her cubs, and approaching a den or area where a mother and her young are present can provoke a defensive reaction.

While the location of wildlife habitats, types of food that animals prefer, and migration patterns are all important factors in wildlife management and safety, they do not directly address the heightened aggression that can occur during breeding and birthing periods. Being aware of these seasonal factors allows crew leaders to plan routes and activities that minimize the risk of encounters with potentially aggressive wildlife.
